In the mid eighties there was a Dutch radio show that held cover contests: once a month a song or artist was given, and every band or musician could send in a tape. The best tapes were played in the show. The name of the show changed a few times, but I think that this was in the Wilde Wereld Period.
A regular contributor was a guy named Jeroen Vriezen, who’s one-man-band demo’s were among my favourites. He sings with a high pitch voice, that some people hate and others love. I love such voices: Peter Wingfield, Prince, The Stylistics are among my dearest singers. I tried to record as much as possible and treasured my Jeroen Vriezen compilation tape. I especially liked the song in which he imitated Billy Holiday, singing the lyrics of an Eddy Cochran song ( Come on everybody )over a very old jazz-loop. One day I wrote him a letter if I could buy more of his music, since I though there sure must be more. Jeroen Vriezen turned out to be a very nice guy, and over the years he send me five tapes with home made demo’s, on which he played all the instruments.
During that time he tried to get a record contract, and finally managed to make one 45 for EMI: No greys, one of his many own compositions. The producers and other people of Emi who are responsible for that 45 did a horrible job: they took all the magic away that his demo’s had and came up with a version that is the complete opposite of what the title says: grey. Even the clothes and the make-up that Jeroen wears on the picture that was made for the cover are a sham. That is how talent is wasted and destroyed by people who don’t give a flying fuck about music.
I lost contact with Jeroen Vriezen after a few years, but I hope that he still makes music. And that he will put up his songs in their original demo-versions up on a site like Podshow.com one day. I still love the tapes he send me, and I think that I am not the only one. Maybe I will make a greatest hits compilation for the first ten people that react, but that will have to wait until I have a little more time than I have right now.
Here is the Billy Holiday song:
And here is one of Jeroen’s own songs, You don’t want me around no more:
