Play that record

Ruud Verkerk sent me a 3 CD box called Play that record. The three CD’s tell the history of recorded sound, in the form of records. Records about records !
I knew this genre to exist, I even collect this stuff, but as always, it takes an original look on the subject to come up with a worthwhile compilation. Ruud Verkerk combined songs about records and jukeboxes with excerpts from stereo demonstration records and all kind of other records about records. And he dug deep; I didn’t know half of the records on these three CD’s!

Ruud Verkerk tops this labour-of-love off with a beautiful designed box. The CD’s have full colour inlays and labels, with all kind of illustrations about records. There is no way I can share the experience of owning this box with you through this site. I can only show you some pictures and let you hear one of the tracks. Whenever I see, hear or get a compilation that I like, I immediately start thinking about making a follow up or answer compilation. There is always more! And by adding a little twist to the original concept, it is always possible to find enough material for a full length CD. But in this case it will be hard work to come up with a CD with records-about-records that Ruud did not use yet and that is worth listening to. I began trying to make a Dutch answer to Play that record; that must be possible. I don’t have a title yet ( Draai ’s een plaatje, Spelen met platen, het valt nog niet mee om een goeie titel voor dit project te verzinnen; misschien moet ik het aan Ruud vragen…), but as soon as the CD is finished, i will let you know of course.
Ruud mentioned that the German record label Bear Family released a CD called One more record please, with 25 country and rockabilly songs about records. Including an extensive booklet with information. I have never seen this CD, but I saw that it also can be bought cheap on Amazon.
